Surveillance is used to  monitor the activities of people and  is one of the most challenging and difficult tasks that investigators  perform. The events of September 11, 2001 have caused an increase in public awareness of surveillance practices.
 

The most common uses are determining if a disability (workers Comp)  claim is valid or if a spouse is having an illicit affair. It is  sometimes used to monitor the care of children or to determine if employees are acting in an appropriate manner.
